ShengShou Zettaminx is a 13x13 megaminx: a dodecahedron with 13 layers on every face, just like a 13x13 cube. The puzzle is made up of 2589 pieces and weighs approx. 1.7 kg. When it was released in 2021, it was the largest mass-produced minx on the market. The Zettaminx is first and foremost a collector's puzzle and a challenge that will keep you busy for hours. It is not a puzzle for timed speedcubing.

Where it fits in the minx family

The names of the bigger megaminxes stand for successive odd-numbered sizes. After the regular megaminx (3 layers) come the Gigaminx (5), Teraminx (7), Petaminx (9) and Examinx (11). The Zettaminx, with 13 layers, is the next step in this series. It has an odd number of layers, so the centers are fixed, and the methods you know from smaller minxes can be extended to the bigger size. It does, however, take a lot of patience. Reviewers say that solving it takes anywhere from a dozen to several dozen hours.

How it turns

For its size, the Zettaminx turns smoothly and without much resistance, and opinions about the mechanism are generally positive. With so many small pieces, though, you should expect what is normal for large puzzles. You need to align the layers carefully before the next move, otherwise lockups occur, and turning too aggressively can lead to popping. Some users add lube to the puzzle after taking it out of the box to make it quieter and smoother. Tension is adjusted with screws.

Who is it for?

The Zettaminx is for people who have already solved smaller minxes, such as the Gigaminx or Teraminx, and want to take on a much bigger size. It is also a great choice for collectors of large puzzles, as it really stands out on the shelf. For a first megaminx, especially for a child, it is better to choose a standard 3-layer model. The Zettaminx is not allowed in official competitions.
