The Valk 4x4x4 Strong Magnetic

The Valk 4 M was the first 4x4 cube in the Valk series, developed by QiYi MoFangGe together with Mats Valk. It measures only 60 mm, which is smaller than most standard 4x4 cubes. That makes it easier to hold in your hand and more comfortable to turn. The Valk 4x4x4 Strong Magnetic is a version with stronger magnets than the standard Valk 4 M. It comes in two color versions: Black and Stickerless Bright.

Design

The mechanism is an evolution of the WuQue model from the same manufacturer. The outer pieces (edges, centers and corners) have one-piece shells, so the friction surfaces are smooth and the layers glide evenly. The cube is legal for official WCA competitions.

How it turns

The feel is soft and pleasant, a bit like the Valk3 Power. When turning slowly, the cube is smooth and stable, while faster turns bring out a slightly crunchy character. Corner cutting is good and fairly flexible. Smoothness is at a decent level, although newer 4x4 cubes can perform better in this respect.

In the Strong Magnetic version, the magnets on the outer layers are noticeably stronger than on the inner layers. This gives high stability and fewer accidental moves, which helps a lot on a 4x4. There is a trade-off, though: some people will find the magnets too strong, and your hands may tire faster during longer sessions. If you prefer lighter turning, consider the version with standard magnets.

Adjustment

Tension is set with adjustment screws. Out of the box, the cube can be set up quite tight, so it is worth loosening it a little right away and finding the setup that suits you. The set also includes extra, stiffer springs for those who like a firmer cube.

Who is it for?

For cubers who train 4x4 seriously and want a stable, compact cube with strong magnets. Collectors of the Valk series will also be pleased. For a first 4x4, especially for a child, a cheaper model with weaker magnets is a better choice.
