VeryPuzzle CORD V1.0

On the outside it's a smooth sphere, but mechanically it's a cube that turns around its faces, edges and corners all at once. VeryPuzzle CORD V1.0 is model #77 in the manufacturer's numbering. It has 26 axes of rotation and is a puzzle for collectors and anyone who enjoys unusual twisty puzzles. It is not a speedcubing cube.

Where do the 26 axes come from?

The axes fall into three groups, and you'll know each of them from a different puzzle:

• 6 face-centre axes, giving the same turns as a classic 3x3 cube,
• 8 corner axes, familiar from corner-turning cubes such as the Skewb,
• 12 edge axes, just like in the Helicopter Cube.

In the CORD V1.0, all three types of moves work in a single puzzle. This gives you many different piece types and plenty of interactions between them. The spherical shape adds to the challenge: once scrambled, the puzzle is still a sphere, so the shape gives you no hints and you have to rely on the colours alone when solving.

CORD vs DIRT

Among VeryPuzzle's designs, the CORD V1.0 has a close relative: the DIRT V1.0. It works on the same principle, but it's based on dodecahedral rather than cubic geometry and has as many as 62 axes of rotation. If you're new to this type of design, the CORD is a gentler start: it has fewer axes, and its layout is easier to relate to the cubes you already know.

Who is it for?

For those who have already mastered the Skewb, the Helicopter Cube or other edge- and corner-turning puzzles and are looking for something that combines these mechanisms in one puzzle. It also makes a great addition to a collection as a mechanical curiosity. For your first cube or for chasing fast times, a classic speedcubing model is a better choice.
