VeryPuzzle Giga Rhombic Tuttminx

VeryPuzzle Giga Rhombic Tuttminx is a collector's puzzle with catalogue number #75. It was designed by Leslie Le and released by VeryPuzzle in 2020. It is the two-layer version of the Rhombic Tuttminx (#63). The relationship is the same as between the Gigaminx and the Megaminx: the design stays the same, but each axis of rotation has two layers instead of one.

How the Giga Rhombic Tuttminx works

The puzzle has a mixed axis system with 42 axes of rotation. 12 of them come from the Megaminx, which turns the faces of a dodecahedron. The other 30 come from an edge-turning dodecahedron. VeryPuzzle calls this layout D+RT. Moves along both types of axes intersect, so the pieces are cut much more densely than in classic Megaminx-family puzzles. In the Giga version every axis has two layers, so there are many more pieces than in the regular Rhombic Tuttminx.

There are no springs. The screws are tightened all the way, so tension cannot be adjusted the way it can on speed cubes. First-impression videos mention popping and lockups on new copies. With such a densely cut mechanism, you turn it slowly and carefully rather than fast.

Rhombic Tuttminx or the Giga version?

If you have never tried the D+RT axis system, you can start with the regular Rhombic Tuttminx, which has one layer on each axis. The Giga version is for those who already know that puzzle or collect larger VeryPuzzle puzzles and want a tougher challenge. It is not a speedcubing puzzle and not for beginners. For a child who is just discovering puzzles, a classic Megaminx is a better choice.
