VeryPuzzle Rhombic Tuttminx V1.0 (model #63) is a spherical puzzle from the Megaminx and Tuttminx family. It was designed by Leslie Le and released by VeryPuzzle in 2019. At first glance it looks like a classic Tuttminx, with pentagonal and hexagonal faces. However, its axes of rotation are arranged differently, so the puzzle feels and solves differently from a regular Tuttminx.

How it differs from the classic Tuttminx

In a Tuttminx, the axes pass through the face centers of a dodecahedron and an icosahedron (D+I system, 32 axes). The Rhombic Tuttminx uses the D+RT system, which combines a dodecahedron with a rhombic triacontahedron. In practice, this gives 42 axes of rotation. The pentagonal faces turn just like on a Megaminx, while the hexagonal faces only turn 180°. This restriction has a huge impact on which moves are possible at all.

How to solve it

This puzzle is not meant for timed speedcubing. It has a very large number of pieces and, according to the manufacturer, as many as 80 sticker colors, so just scrambling and solving it takes quite a while. People who have solved it usually start the same way as with a Megaminx: one pentagonal face first, then layer by layer downwards. Most of the solve can be done intuitively. It gets hardest on the last face, because the hexagon half-turns heavily restrict your moves. Reviewers compare this stage to a 3x3x2 cuboid. If you know the Megaminx and have a few shape mods behind you, you can manage without ready-made algorithms, but you will need plenty of patience.

Other versions of the Rhombic Tuttminx

V1.0 is the basic version of this puzzle. VeryPuzzle has also released its variants: F1 (#65) with extra cuts that unlock some of the moves, F2 (#85) with extra cuts on the pentagons, Rhombic Tuttminx 66 (#71), in which the pentagons are replaced with hexagons, and the two-layer Giga Rhombic Tuttminx (#75). V1.0 is the best place to start with this family.

Who is it for?

For collectors and anyone who enjoys unusual dodecahedral puzzles and has already solved a Megaminx. As a first puzzle, including for a child, a regular Megaminx is a better choice.
