VeryPuzzle Tuttminx F1 is a puzzle for collectors and for solvers who have already mastered the Megaminx and the regular Tuttminx. The manufacturer labels it as number #88. It is a spherical version of the Tuttminx with extra cuts on the hexagonal faces. The puzzle uses the same rotation axis layout as the classic Tuttminx, but the additional cuts divide its surface into more pieces, which makes solving harder.

What is a Tuttminx?

The classic Tuttminx, designed by Lee Tutt, has the shape of a truncated icosahedron (like a football) and 32 faces: 12 pentagonal and 20 hexagonal. You can think of it as a bigger relative of the Megaminx. Besides the pentagonal faces, the hexagonal ones turn as well. In the F1 version the shape is rounded into a sphere, and the faces are separated from each other only by the sticker pattern and the cuts.

What the extra cuts change

On a regular Tuttminx, solving methods carry over from the Megaminx fairly easily. The extra cuts on the F1 create new types of pieces, so some algorithms have to be worked out from scratch or adapted. This is not a puzzle for setting speed records. It will be most fun for someone who enjoys figuring out unusual mechanisms and solving them calmly, step by step. Because of the spherical shape, keep a close eye on which face is turning, as there are no edges to give you a hint.

DIY kit

The Tuttminx F1 comes as a DIY kit. You assemble the puzzle from its parts yourself and then apply the stickers according to the instructions. Assembly takes quite a while and requires patience, but it lets you get to know the mechanism really well.
