From the outside, it looks like an ordinary 2x2x3 cuboid. After a few moves, though, you'll notice that the layers aren't divided the way the shape suggests. WitEden 2x2x3 I Camouflage belongs to the Camouflage series, in which WitEden hides a mechanism with a different cut layout inside a familiar shape. The puzzle changes shape as you solve it, and in models from this series some moves are blocked (bandaging) until the pieces are in the right positions.

What makes it challenging

The usual 2x2x3 method won't be enough here. First, you need to figure out where the layers really run and which moves are possible at any given moment. Only then can you plan your next steps. Once scrambled, the cuboid loses its regular shape, so simply returning it to a rectangular block is already part of the challenge. This is a puzzle to solve calmly and thoughtfully, not against the clock.

How it turns

The Camouflage series mechanism is built for the unusual layer division, not for speed. Reviews of models from this series are similar: straight out of the box, turning can feel dry and fairly heavy, but over time and after lubing, the puzzle turns noticeably lighter. It's a good idea to align the layers carefully before each turn. Forcing misaligned pieces leads to lockups and sometimes even popping. Don't expect high TPS or corner cutting here, as this is not a speedcubing puzzle.

Version I or II?

WitEden offers two 2x2x3 Camouflage cuboids. They have almost identical outer dimensions, but they differ in their hidden cut layout, meaning how they change shape and which moves they block. These are two separate puzzles, not two finishes of the same model.

Who is it for?

For someone who can already solve the classic 3x3 and regular cuboids and now wants a puzzle that makes you think rather than replay memorized algorithms. It's also a great addition to a collection of shape-shifting and bandaged puzzles. It's not really suitable as a child's first cube. Without puzzle experience, it's easy to get discouraged, and the mechanism needs to be handled more gently than typical speedcubes.
