A proportional 2x2x4 cuboid from WitEden measuring approx. 51 x 51 x 102 mm, with a black body and no magnets. After a 90° turn of a longer face it loses its rectangular shape, making it a good way to start your adventure with shape-shifting puzzles.
WitEden 2x2x4 is a cuboid with a square 2x2 base and four vertical layers. All pieces have equal sides, so the puzzle is fully proportional. When solved, it forms a rectangular block measuring approx. 51 x 51 x 102 mm, so it looks like two 2x2 cubes stacked on top of each other. The cuboid has a black body and no magnets.
The horizontal layers turn normally by 90°, just like on a 2x2 cube. The longer 2x4 side faces are different. After a 180° turn the cuboid returns to its shape, but after a 90° turn it loses it, because some pieces stick out beyond the outline. That is why the WitEden 2x2x4 is a shape-shifting puzzle. While you scramble it, it stops looking like a rectangular block, and one of the goals of solving is to restore its original form.
There is an even number of vertical layers, so you have to expect parity cases, similar to a 4x4. If you know the 2x2 and have already solved bigger cubes a few times, you will manage without much trouble. There are only a few new algorithms here, and most of the work is understanding how the shape behaves.
Users usually describe the turning as smooth and comfortable for a cuboid of this type. However, a few points come up repeatedly in reviews. The outer layers turn more lightly than the middle ones. Looser end layers can occur, and individual reviews mention popping and lower-quality stickers. This is a puzzle for relaxed solving, not for breaking speed records.
For people who can already solve classic cubes and want to try something outside the WCA events. The 2x2x4 cuboid is a good start with shape-shifting puzzles. It is not overly difficult, and the changing shape requires a different way of thinking than a regular cube. It also looks great in a collection next to other WitEden cuboids. As your very first puzzle, a regular 2x2 or 3x3 cube will be a better choice.
