WitEden 3x3x10 I

WitEden 3x3x10 I is a shape mod cuboid. It is based on the WitEden 3x3x9, a 3x3 with thin layers that together give it a nearly cube-like shape. The 3x3x10 version has one extra layer, which makes it asymmetric and slightly taller than it is wide. After a few moves the extra layer can end up on the opposite side, so the puzzle changes shape easily. It's the same shape-shifting effect you know from cuboids with uneven dimensions.

How does it solve?

This cuboid calls for patience, not high TPS. The mechanism is very complex, so turning isn't as smooth as on a regular 3x3 cube and popping can happen from time to time. On top of that, the thin layers are hard to grip one at a time. It's best to turn calmly and align the layers carefully. Fast, aggressive turning is the easiest way to make the puzzle fall apart. During the solve you'll often need to position several layers at once. Experience with other cuboids comes in handy when the shape changes.

Version I or II?

There are two variants of the 3x3x10 on the market. Version I, described here, has a classic layer arrangement. In version II the middle layers are rotated 90 degrees relative to the rest. This arrangement changes how the solve goes and raises the difficulty. Version I is the better choice for your first encounter with this model.

Who is it for?

This is a purely collectible puzzle. It will appeal to anyone who enjoys cuboids, shape mods and unusual solutions. It is definitely not a speedcubing cube and it is not used in official WCA events. For a child's first cube, a regular 3x3 is a better choice; reach for the 3x3x10 only once classic cuboids no longer pose a challenge.
