WitEden 3x3x11 I

WitEden 3x3x11 I is a cuboid with a 3x3 base and 11 vertical layers. It is a full-function version, which means every layer turns, not just selected ones. It measures about 59 mm wide and 74 mm tall, so it is not a cube. When you turn the side faces by 90 degrees, the puzzle changes shape (shape-shifting). It is better suited to a collection and relaxed solving than to speedsolving.

How to solve it

Because the dimensions differ along each axis, some pieces stick out beyond the outline after a 90-degree side turn. Some moves are then blocked until you restore the shape. That is why solving this cuboid takes more planning than a regular 3x3 cube. Knowing methods for big cubes and other 3x3xN cuboids helps.

To be honest about how it turns: the mechanism is very complex, and turning is noticeably heavier than on a regular cube. Lockups do happen, and corner cutting is limited. This is not a cube for TPS or for everyday timed solving. Lube and turning gently, without force, will help.

Version I or II?

WitEden makes this cuboid in two versions. In version II, the three middle layers are rotated by 90 degrees, so it shape-shifts and solves differently. Version I, described here, has a classic design without rotated layers and makes a good first 3x3x11 cuboid for your collection.

Who is it for?

For collectors of unusual puzzles and for cubers who can already solve big cubes and want to tackle a tall shape-shifting cuboid. For a child's first cube, a classic 3x3 cube is a better choice, as this one takes patience and experience. This cuboid is not allowed in official WCA competitions.
