WitEden 3x3x5

WitEden 3x3x5 is a cuboid, a puzzle shaped like a rectangular box. The easiest way to describe it is as a 3x3x3 with one extra layer on top and one on the bottom. All three dimensions are odd, so every face turns by 90 degrees. After such a turn of a side face, the puzzle loses its box shape, which is why it belongs to the shape-shifting puzzle category. The version available in our shop has a black body.

Solving and shape-shifting

The 3x3 faces turn normally. The side faces are 3x5, so a 90-degree turn clearly changes the shape of the puzzle, and a 180-degree turn restores it. Because of this, the puzzle looks more intimidating at first than it really is. If you can solve a 3x3x3, you will usually figure out quickly how to approach the extra layers. The extra difficulty comes from keeping track of the shape rather than from complicated algorithms.

How it turns

This is a puzzle for solving for fun, not a speedcubing design. According to customer reviews, it is fairly dry and a bit stiff out of the box. After lubing, the turning becomes noticeably smoother. Still, it is not a puzzle for high TPS: faster turning can cause catching, and corner cutting is limited. Calm, precise moves let you solve it without problems. Compared with older 3x3x5 puzzles, users praise its proportions and more stable construction.

3x3x5 vs 3x3x5 II

WitEden also makes a 3x3x5 II version with an offset centre of rotation. It works like a 3x3x7 with two layers cut off and solves differently. This product is the classic 3x3x5, symmetrical around the middle layer.
