The "II" in the name does not mean a second generation of the same model. It marks a different variant of the puzzle. WitEden 3x3x5 II Cuboid Cube is a center-shifted cuboid: the axis of rotation does not run through the middle of the five layers but is shifted towards one end. In terms of design, it is a 3x3x7 with the axis shifted by two layers, with two layers cut off. If you order it expecting a regular 3x3x5, you will be surprised, so it is better to know this before you buy.

How it differs from a classic 3x3x5

In a standard 3x3x5, everything is symmetrical around the middle layer. Here, a 180° turn of a side face moves its pieces by two layers, so the puzzle quickly loses its regular shape. That is why it belongs to the shape-shifting puzzles. Users describe it as an "extended 3x3": the three layers on the side of the shifted center behave like a regular 3x3, while the other two behave like part of a 3x3x7. Once the shape gets scrambled, some moves are blocked (bandaging), so the first step of solving is usually restoring the shape.

Methods and tutorials for a regular 3x3x5 do not apply here directly, and there are few resources for this version. You will have to work out much of the solution on your own.

Mechanism

This is a collector's puzzle, not a speed cube. According to user reviews, turning is not as smooth as on modern 3x3 cubes, and lube noticeably improves it. Cuboids from this WitEden series can also pop, so when the puzzle is scrambled, turn calmly and align the layers carefully before the next move.

Who is it for?

For those who can already solve a 3x3, ideally also a regular 3x3x5 cuboid, and want a puzzle where familiar patterns have to be rethought from scratch. It is also a great addition to a collection of cuboids and shape-shifting puzzles. As a child's first "unusual" cube, it is likely to be frustrating. A classic 3x3x5 with a centered axis is a better choice to start with.
