WitEden Camouflage 2x3x4

When solved, the WitEden Camouflage 2x3x4 looks like an ordinary 2x3x4 cuboid, but that's just camouflage. Inside, it runs on a 4x4x4 mechanism with some pieces permanently joined together (bandaging). Extra extensions give the solved puzzle its regular shape. A few moves are all it takes to change that shape, because the real axes of rotation don't line up with the cuts you see on the outside.

What Camouflage is all about

The whole Camouflage series from WitEden consists of shape variants of a bandaged 4x4x4 cube. The 2x3x4 version is one of the smaller ones in the family. When solving it, you first need to figure out where the layers really are. Then you have to learn how to get around the blocks created by the joined pieces. Knowing a 4x4x4 method helps, but the algorithm alone isn't enough, because some moves can't be made in a given shape state. That's exactly where the fun lies.

How it turns

This is not a speedcubing puzzle and it has no magnets. Reviews of the Camouflage models are fairly consistent: it's worth aligning the layers carefully before each turn. With imprecise turning, lockups can happen, and occasionally individual pieces pop. They can usually just be pressed back into place. This is a puzzle you solve calmly and thoughtfully, not against the clock.

Who is it for?

For cubers who can already solve the 3x3x3 and 4x4x4 and want to try shape-shifting or bandaged puzzles. The Camouflage 2x3x4 also makes a great addition to a cuboid collection, especially since hardly anyone will guess what's hidden inside when it's solved. For a child's first puzzle, a classic 3x3x3 cube is a better choice.
