WitEden Cubic 3x3x9 v1 has the shape of a regular 3x3 cube with sides of approx. 57 mm, but on one axis each layer is split into three, giving 9 independent layers. It is a non-magnetic cuboid with a black body for those who already know the 3x3 and want to try something harder.
WitEden Cubic 3x3x9 v1 is a puzzle that looks like a regular 3x3 cube, but has 9 layers instead of 3 on one axis. Each of the three standard layers is split into three thinner ones that turn independently. From the outside it is a cube with sides of approx. 57 mm, while inside it runs a 3x3x9 cuboid mechanism. Version v1 (also labelled 3x3x9 I) is the basic variant of this WitEden design. This piece has a black body.
With turns like on a regular 3x3, the cube works smoothly and the thin layers align well. However, it is a cuboid, not a speedcube. Corner cutting is limited, and fast, imprecise moves can cause catching. Users point out that single thin layers are harder to grip and turn separately than the layers of a standard cube. It is best solved at a calm pace, with a focus on precise turns. The cube has no magnets.
You need to know how to solve cuboids. A popular approach is to pair up the thin layers first and reduce the puzzle to a simpler cuboid, then finish it like a 3x3. Along the way you will run into parities typical of cuboids, so knowing a few extra algorithms comes in handy.
WitEden makes two variants of this puzzle. In version II the centers are additionally split into three parts, which makes the solve harder. Version v1 has a simpler layout, so it is a better choice to start your adventure with this design.
For cubers who can comfortably solve a 3x3 and want to try cuboids or build a collection of unusual puzzles. A tall 3x3x9 cuboid takes up a lot of space, while this cube fits in your hand like a regular 3x3. It is not suitable as a first cube. A child who is just learning the 3x3 should start with a regular cube.
