WitEden 4x4x3 Mixup

From a distance it looks like an ordinary cube, but inside it works differently. WitEden 4x4x3 Mixup is a puzzle from the Mixup series that combines a 4x4x3 cuboid with a shape-shifting mechanism. In two directions you turn it like a 4x4, and in the third like a 3x3. On top of that, there are angled moves that don't fit the usual 90° grid. After a few of these moves, the cube loses its cubic shape and the pieces end up in places a regular cuboid would never move them to.

How the Mixup works

A regular 4x4x3 cube is solved largely with methods known from the 4x4 and 3x3. The Mixup adds a second layer of difficulty. Angled turns mix up the piece types, so you need to know how to restore the cube's shape and make sure every piece returns to its position. Only then does the "regular" colour solving begin. The mechanism is deep-cut, which means the pieces are cut deep into the puzzle. It takes a little getting used to how the layers behave once the puzzle is out of cube shape.

This is not a cube for setting times. It has no magnets or UV coating, and with a puzzle of this type what matters most is whether the mechanism lets you make unusual moves without lockups. Don't expect TPS records here.

Who is it for?

For people who already solve the 4x4 and cuboids and are looking for something new, as well as for collectors of shape-shifting puzzles. As a first Mixup cube, this puzzle will probably be difficult. An easier start is the 3x3x3 Mixup, where it's simpler to understand how this mechanism works. For a child's first cube, a classic 3x3 is a better choice.
