WitEden & Oskar 4x4x4 Mixup Cube

WitEden & Oskar 4x4x4 Mixup Cube is a four-layer puzzle from the Mixup series. WitEden makes it in collaboration with Oskar van Deventer, a well-known designer of unusual puzzles. From the outside it looks like a regular 4x4 cube, but it works differently. In Mixup puzzles, some layers can be turned by 45 degrees instead of a full 90. In this position, pieces of different types can swap places. That's why you can't solve a Mixup with classic 4x4 algorithms alone.

How it differs from a regular 4x4

In a standard cube, every piece has its fixed place: an edge always stays an edge and a center stays a center. In the Mixup, this rule doesn't apply. When you turn a layer by 45 degrees, the cube temporarily loses its cubic shape, and pieces end up in positions they would never reach in a regular 4x4. In practice, you get new cases to solve, and solving takes more figuring out than repeating memorized sequences.

This is a puzzle for relaxed solving, not a speedcubing cube. It has no magnets or tension adjustment system, and the turning feels much more mechanical than in modern 4x4 cubes built for fast times. It's better to turn it calmly and precisely than to push for high TPS.

Who is it for?

For anyone who can already solve a classic 4x4 and is looking for something new. It's also a great fit for collectors of twisty and shape-shifting puzzles. Without knowing how to solve a 4x4, the entry barrier is high, so for a child's first cube it's better to choose something simpler.
