X-Man Design (XMD) is a QiYi sub-brand, best known for the Tornado 3x3 series, on which Max Park set the 3.13 s world record. The range also includes the Bell Pyraminx, Volt Square-1, Wingy Skewb, the big Shadow and Spark cubes, as well as lubes and spare parts.
X-Man Design, or XMD for short, is one of the main sub-brands of the Chinese manufacturer QiYi MoFangGe. The other one is TheValk. Since 2016, this name has been used for speed cubes and puzzles from almost all WCA categories: 3x3 cubes, big NxN cubes, Pyraminx, Skewb, Megaminx and Square-1. In our range, X-Man Design cubes are mainly models for people who solve against the clock or want a good magnetic cube for everyday practice.
The brand's best-known series is the Tornado 3x3. Max Park solved a 3x3 in 3.13 s on a Tornado V3, which was the single world record at the time. The series has gone through several generations: V2, V3, V3 Premium, V4 and V5. Each new version mainly changes the magnets and how they are adjusted. Most models come in several variants:
A more expensive version is not necessarily better for everyone. The Pioneer is noticeably heavier and very fast, so some cubers prefer the lighter Flagship or Standard. The exact set of features differs between generations, so check the details on the product page of the specific cube.
XMD is also well known beyond 3x3. The Bell Pyraminx was one of the first mass-produced pyraminxes with magnetic positioning, and its successor is the Bell V2. The Square-1 Volt V2 comes in two versions: Half Magnetic has magnets only in the slice, while Full Magnetic also has them in the top and bottom layers. The Skewb Wingy and Megaminx Galaxy are popular too. Among the big cubes, we have the Hong 5x5, Shadow 6x6 and Spark 7x7, available in magnetic versions, and the newer ones also with Ball-Core.
For X-Man Design cubes, you will find XMD Lube, a case for the Tornado V3 and spare parts, such as core arms for the Tornado V3 and V4. This means you don't have to replace a damaged cube with a new one straight away.
For beginners, a sensible choice is usually the Standard version or an older Tornado generation: you get magnets and tension adjustment without paying extra for features you only really appreciate at higher TPS. The top Flagship and Pioneer variants make the most sense for people who already know what feel suits them.
