X-Man Volt Square-1 V2 Half Magnetic

X-Man Volt Square-1 V2 Half Magnetic is the second generation of the Square-1 from X-Man Design and a development of the Volt V1. The first Volt was the basis of many competitors' setups, and the V2 mainly improves stability and durability. The Half Magnetic version has magnets in only some of the pieces. So the puzzle is not fully magnetic, but it gives you noticeable help when aligning the layers. The model was released in 2019 and is legal for official WCA competitions.

How does the Volt Square-1 V2 turn?

The puzzle is predictable and easy to control while solving. Compared with the V1, the pieces fit together more tightly, so the whole puzzle feels more solid. The plastic also produces a nicer, fuller sound. According to users, the slice turns very smoothly, while the U and D layers turn slower and are more controlled. Some cubers like this, others find it a drawback. Straight out of the box the puzzle can be rather dry, so many people lube it right away.

During fast solves you may get minor lockups and catching, especially if the puzzle is set too loose. Tightening the screws and finding a setting that suits your style usually helps.

Adjustment and construction

Tension is adjusted with screws, the classic system used in Square-1 puzzles. However, the design has been slightly changed compared with the V1, and the changes are for the better. The V2 has a lock nut that prevents the screws from loosening on their own and protects the core from stripping the thread. The pieces of the puzzle, including the tension adjustment mechanism, are made of thinner layers of plastic.

Note for collectors: the gold XMD logo wears off over time from finger friction against the plastic.

Half Magnetic or Fully Magnetic?

The Volt V2 is also available in a Fully Magnetic (UD) version, with magnets in all pieces. The Half Magnetic version has fewer of them, so it gives a less noticeable "click" when aligning the layers. It's a good choice if you want a magnetic Square-1 but don't need magnets throughout the whole puzzle.
