X-man Spark M 7x7x7

This is the magnetic version of the Spark, a 7x7 cube designed by X-Man and manufactured by MoFangGe (QiYi). The X-Man Spark M 7x7x7 was released in 2019. Its design builds on the earlier WuJi cube. It measures 67 mm and weighs about 197 g, so it is fairly compact and light for a 7x7. On a big cube this matters: your hands get less tired during a long solve, and the outer layers are easier to turn with quick finger moves.

Spark M 7x7 construction

The edges are made of two parts. The inner parts of the centers and corners are made of unpigmented plastic, with colored or black caps on the outside. Based on available information, unpigmented plastic is said to wear more slowly and give a smoother turn. The edge pieces have plenty of grooves that reduce the contact surface between layers and therefore the friction. Tension is set with adjustment screws.

How it turns

The feel is soft and slightly crunchy, with low turning resistance. The magnets catch the layers and keep them from misaligning. On a 7x7 this is a big help, because with so many layers a moment of carelessness is enough to throw the cube out of alignment. Lockups are rare, and the corner cutting is good enough for smooth solving without precisely aligning every layer. As with most 7x7s, the inner layers turn more slowly than the outer ones. Some users improve this with lube.

Spark M or Spark V2 M?

There is also a second generation of this model, the Spark V2 M. It has a magnetic Ball-Core, meaning magnets in the core itself that further stabilize the layers. It is smaller (about 64-65 mm) and noticeably heavier (about 270 g). The original Spark M has no Ball-Core. It is a good choice if you want a lighter magnetic 7x7 with a calmer, less "weighty" character.

Who is it for?

For cubers who already solve 4x4 and 5x5 and want to move on to a magnetic 7x7, and for those who practice this event for competitions. The cube is legal for official competitions.
