What is the Black Core version

XMD Tornado V5 3x3 Pioneer UV Black Core is the top-of-the-range Tornado V5 from X-Man Design in a special edition with black internal parts. The mechanism and performance are the same as in the regular Pioneer UV. The difference is in the looks: you'll see the black internals when turning the layers and when adjusting the cube, while on the outside it is a stickerless cube in bright colors with a UV coating.

How the Tornado V5 Pioneer turns

The Pioneer is the faster and more aggressive version of the V5. Compared with the Flagship, it turns faster and snaps the layers into place more strongly, which comes in handy at high TPS. Users describe it as light, airy and responsive, better suited to light turning than to heavy pressing. If you prefer a calm, controllable cube, you may need some time to set it up to your liking. Some people report squeaking right out of the box. It usually goes away after lubing. Experienced Tornado V3 and V4 users note that the V5 has a very similar character, and the most noticeable changes are the lower weight and the wider adjustment range.

Magnets and adjustment

• 20-magnet Ball-Core: corner magnets attracted to the core and 12 repelling edge magnets help align the layers and stabilize the cube.
• MagLev: magnetic repulsion replaces springs, so turning is lighter and faster than in the spring-core Flagship.
• Dual Adjustment System: 8 levels of axis distance and 8 levels of MagLev elasticity, set manually and marked with numbers, so it's easy to go back to your favorite setup.
• Magnet strength adjustment: 9 levels for the corner-core magnets and 7 levels for the edge magnets. Adjust the edges carefully.
• One-piece core keeps the spacing of all faces identical at the same setting.

Who is it for?

For speedcubers who want a fast MagLev cube and enjoy fine-tuning their setup, since almost everything here can be adjusted. Choose the Black Core version if you care about the look of the black internals. In terms of performance, you gain nothing over the standard Pioneer UV. If you prefer classic springs and a slightly calmer feel, consider the Tornado V5 Flagship with an 8-magnet Ball-Core. For a first cube, a simpler magnetic model will be a better choice.
