YJ 1x3x3 Floppy (Super Floppy)

YJ 1x3x3 floppy looks like a single layer of a 3x3 cube: nine pieces arranged in a 3x3 square. According to the information we have had in the description so far, it is the first 1x3x3 puzzle from YongJun. The mechanism works like a Super Floppy, so the side faces can be turned not only by 180° but also by 90°.

How it differs from a regular floppy

A classic floppy cube only allows 180° turns and is easy to solve, which is why it is often given to beginners. In the Super Floppy version, a 90° turn moves the corners above and below the edges. The puzzle then stops being flat and changes shape, and in the most extreme case all the corners can end up on a single edge. To solve it, you first need to understand how to restore its shape, and only then the colors. Even so, it is still a relatively simple puzzle that you can figure out without knowing any 3x3 algorithms.

How it turns

For such a small puzzle, the construction is fairly elaborate, and turning is smooth when you turn calmly. However, it is not designed for fast, timed solving. Some users mention lockups when the layers are not aligned, especially after the shape has changed. If you turn more precisely and align the faces before the next move, the problem is much less noticeable. Adjustment screws let you fine-tune the play of the mechanism a little.

Who is it for?

For people who have already solved a regular floppy and want something a bit more challenging, for collectors of cuboids and shape-shifting puzzles, and as a small fidget to turn in your hand. It also makes a good gift for a child who is just starting out with puzzles. 1x3x3 is not a WCA event, so this puzzle is not used at official competitions.
