YJ Apple Cube 3x3 by YongJun is a shape mod, a 3x3 cube with a modified shape. The pieces don't differ in colour, only in shape. To solve the puzzle, you need to arrange them so that the whole thing forms an apple. Inside is a standard 3x3 mechanism, so it turns just like a classic cube. The only thing that changes is how you tell whether a piece is in the right place.

How to solve the apple cube

Without colours, you have to look at the height and profile of each piece, much like with the Mirror Cube. If you know a method for the regular 3x3 cube, you can solve the Apple Cube with the same algorithms. First, though, you need to learn to "read" the shapes, and for many people that's the biggest challenge of this puzzle. Once scrambled, it loses its apple shape and looks like a random sculpture. When solved, it's an apple again.

The turning is smooth and good enough for relaxed, casual solving. This is not a cube for breaking records: the irregular shape limits corner cutting, and the large size doesn't help with fast turning. You can change the tension with the adjustment screws, so you can tighten it if it feels too loose out of the box.

Who is it for?

The Apple Cube is best for someone who can already solve a classic 3x3 cube and is looking for something different. It's also a great addition to a shape mod collection and works as a decoration for a desk or shelf. For a child who is just starting out, a regular 3x3 is a better first choice, and the apple can be the next step. This model is not allowed in official WCA competitions.
