YJ Guanlong Skewb V2: a simple skewb to start with
Guanlong is YJ's (YongJun) budget line of puzzles. The
YJ Guanlong Skewb V2 is the second version of the skewb in this series, released in 2018. Its design is basic, with no elaborate systems or extras. This makes it a good choice as
your first puzzle of this type, both for learning and for your first timed solves.
What is a skewb?
A skewb looks like a cube, but it turns around axes that pass through the corners. Each move turns half of the puzzle. It has only a few pieces (8 corners and 6 centers), and beginner methods are quick to learn. That's why the skewb is a great second puzzle after the classic 3x3 cube, also for kids. Skewb is an official competition event, and you can use this model at competitions.
How does it turn?
Turning is smooth and predictable, and the mechanism performs
as you would expect for its price. This is not a flagship skewb where an advanced competitor fine-tunes every detail of the setup. For a budget model, however, the Guanlong V2 does well in practice and
in speedsolving. It is more than enough to learn how to solve it and start improving your times.
Tension adjustment
Tension is set with adjustment screws. A looser setting gives faster, lighter turning but increases the risk of popping. A tighter setting gives more control at the cost of speed. Beginners usually do best with a medium or slightly tighter setting.
Who is it for?
For people buying their first skewb who want to find out whether they enjoy this event. It's also a sensible choice for parents looking for an affordable but genuine speedcubing puzzle for their child. An advanced cuber who regularly competes in skewb can use the Guanlong as a backup or practice puzzle. Such a person usually chooses their main competition skewb from more expensive models.
