After the first few moves, this cube stops looking like a cube. YJ KingKong/New Axis is a shape-shifting Axis Cube puzzle, a shape mod of the classic 3x3 cube. Its turning axes are tilted, so the layers have different shapes, and once scrambled the cube turns into an irregular shape with protruding pieces. This model is also known as the YJ Axis Cube V2 or KingKong V2.

How do you solve it?

Underneath, it's still a 3x3. Any 3x3 solving method will do, and you don't need to learn any extra algorithms. The challenge lies elsewhere. Pieces are harder to recognize by their shape than on a regular cube, and the whole puzzle looks different after every move. You also have to keep track of center orientation, because on an Axis Cube you can see when a center is rotated. If you can already solve a 3x3, this model gives you a new challenge without having to learn everything from scratch.

Mechanism

Inside is a mechanism based on a 3x3 speed cube from the same brand. According to distributors, YJ adapted it from the SuLong model. The pieces hold together well, and thanks to the rounded shapes the cube has decent corner cutting for an irregularly shaped puzzle. Tension is set with adjustment screws, so you can tighten or loosen the cube to suit your turning style. The model has no magnets, and the layers don't snap into place on their own. It's better treated as a puzzle to solve for fun than as gear for setting times. It is not allowed in official competitions.

Who is it for?

For cubers who can solve a 3x3 and want to try their first shape mod. It also makes a great gift for a child who can already handle the classic cube. If you're just learning, it's easier to master the basics on a regular 3x3 and come back to the Axis Cube later.
