YJ Magnetic Blocks

YJ Magnetic Blocks is a 3D spatial puzzle, not a twisty cube. There is no mechanism inside, so nothing turns here. The set is a magnetic version of the classic Soma Cube, invented by the Danish mathematician Piet Hein. You get 7 pieces of different shapes, and your task is to assemble them into a complete cube. Every piece has magnets inside that hold the pieces together. The finished cube doesn't fall apart, and you can also build shapes that would topple over straight away without magnets.

How it works

Each piece is made of small unit cubes. One is L-shaped and consists of three unit cubes, while the other six have four each. Together that makes 27 unit cubes, i.e. a 3x3x3 cube. Assembling it is easier than it looks at first glance, because there are many correct solutions. Things get harder with the shapes shown on the cards included in the set. Each card shows a different shape to recreate, and the cards vary in difficulty. The more complex shapes call for good spatial imagination and a few attempts.

The magnets are especially useful for tall and "overhanging" constructions. The pieces connect with a clear click, and you can safely pick up the set and look at it from every side.

Colour versions

• Stickerless Bright: each piece has a different bright colour, making it easier to tell the pieces apart and compare your build with the card.
• Stickerless transparent: pieces made of clear plastic. They look great on a desk, but telling the pieces apart takes a little more attention.

Who is it for?

For anyone who wants a break from twisty cubes and would like to try a different kind of puzzle. TPS and knowing algorithms don't matter here – only spatial thinking does. The set also makes a great gift for a child: to start with, it's enough to assemble the cube, and the cards let you gradually raise the difficulty. Because of the magnets and small parts, younger children should play with it under adult supervision.
