YJ Mastermorphix Pyraminx

The YJ Mastermorphix Pyraminx is a 3x3 cube in the shape of a pyramid. It looks like a Pyraminx, but inside it has a regular 3x3 mechanism and has nothing in common with the Pyraminx. This is the 2018 version. The faces are flat rather than convex (pillowed), so when solved it forms a clear, sharp pyramid measuring approx. 92 mm.

How to solve the Mastermorphix

The method is the same as for a regular 3x3 cube. If you can solve a 3x3, you don't need to learn any new algorithms. Recognising the pieces is harder, though:

• the centers have two colors and you need to watch their orientation, because if one is turned 180 degrees, the puzzle is not solved,
• the edges have a single color,
• the corners have three colors or a single color, depending on whether they form a tip of the pyramid or sit in the middle of a face.

The Mastermorphix is a shape mod, so after a few moves it no longer looks like a pyramid and starts taking on irregular shapes. The hardest part is usually keeping track of which side is which. The pieces also come in different sizes, so holding the cube in your hands takes a little getting used to.

Turning and adjustment

For a shape mod, the YJ Mastermorphix turns very well. Users report that turning is smooth, popping is rare, and a popped piece is easy to put back in. Some people notice that the tips of the pyramid can be twisted. This does not affect solving. Tension is adjusted with adjustment screws, so you can set the cube looser or tighter.

Who is it for?

For anyone who can already solve a 3x3 cube and wants something different without learning a new method. It also works well as the first shape-shifting puzzle in your collection. It is not a WCA event, so the cube is not used in official competitions. It's a puzzle for training piece recognition and for the fun of solving.
