YJ MGC EVO 3x3x3

YJ MGC EVO 3x3x3 is the first generation of YJ's magnetic EVO cube, released in 2021 and built on the MGC V2. What sets it apart is tension adjustment that is unusually extensive for this price range: you can set the spring tension and the magnet strength separately. It does have a distinct character, though, and it won't suit everyone, so below we tell you straight how it turns.

How it turns

The turning feels similar to the DaYan TengYun V1. The cube is light and very fast, and the feel is more crispy than smooth. It keeps up well with your fingers at high TPS. Its main weakness is stability: even on the second-strongest magnet setting the cube can feel quite unsettled, and overshooting happens easily if your turning is less precise. Users also point out that it is on the louder side and that the plastic can be less durable than in more expensive models.

Spring and magnet adjustment

• 11-level spring tension adjustment. You change the setting by hand, no tools needed.
• Magnet strength adjustment in 6 positions. You change the setting with the small screwdriver included in the set.
• Both systems work the same way: the higher the number, the stiffer the springs and the stronger the magnets.

Maintenance tip: the easiest way to remove the adjustment system is to press the small "mushroom" next to the core arm with your fingertips while turning the whole layer at the same time.

First-generation EVO vs EVO V2

YJ later released the MGC EVO V2, available in standard, UV and Ball-Core (with magnets in the core) versions. The V2 was developed in response to feedback on the first version, mainly regarding stability. This cube is the first-generation EVO, without Ball-Core and without UV coating.

Who is it for?

For cubers who like fast, light cubes, want to experiment with the settings themselves and don't mind a less "controlled" feel. Some people also praise it for OH. If you prefer a stable and controllable setup, or you are a beginner looking for a predictable first magnetic cube, you'll be better off choosing a model with stronger-holding magnets.
