YJ MGC EVO Pyraminx

YJ MGC EVO Pyraminx

YJ MGC EVO Pyraminx is a magnetic Pyraminx from the MGC EVO series, in which YJ combines an affordable price with adjustment options. It came out at the end of 2022 and brought features known from the MGC EVO 3x3 to the pyramid, including adjustable magnet strength. It's a good choice if you want to move from a non-magnetic Pyraminx to a speedcubing-oriented model without buying the most expensive pyramid right away.

How it turns

The puzzle is light (72 g), and turning is fast and light. According to reviews, the feel is smooth and the factory lube works well straight out of the box, so a light setup that doesn't cover it up is all you need. A larger hole in the center is meant to improve corner cutting. In user tests it is decent but doesn't stand out from the competition (about 50 degrees in both directions). Some people notice audible spring noise right out of the box. There are also reports of stiffer units that need to be loosened and set up.

Magnets, adjustment and surface

• 6 levels of magnet strength. You set them with the small screwdriver included in the set. Some reviewers feel the difference between the weakest and strongest setting is small, so don't expect a very wide range of change.
• Tension adjustment with springs and screws. Tensioning is changed the classic way, with no separate system in the core.
• Frosted plastic with a concave-convex profile, designed to improve grip. Combined with the pyramid shape, the matte surface can feel slippery, and some cubers need a moment to get used to it.

Who is it for?

The Pyraminx MGC EVO works well for someone starting to practice Pyraminx for time and for cubers who want an inexpensive magnetic pyramid for regular solving. Advanced competitors looking for the strongest corner cutting and clearly noticeable magnet adjustment may want to consider flagship models from other manufacturers. For a child, it's a fully sufficient first "real" Pyraminx.
