The classic pyraminx is the simplest official WCA puzzle. With the YJ Petal Pyraminx, YongJun has turned it into a shape mod that takes more thinking. Each face has a rotating circular center that moves independently of the face turns. This means that besides the edges and corners, you also have to solve these pieces. The model was released in 2019 and comes in a stickerless bright color scheme.

How is it different from a regular pyraminx?

On a standard pyraminx, the centers are fixed. On the Petal, they rotate, so solving the layers isn't the end of the solve. The puzzle has no rotating tips, the small corners that you turn separately on a classic pyraminx. This changes how you solve it: your habits from the official pyraminx will only help partly, and you'll have to work out the rest yourself. If you already know the pyraminx and are looking for a new challenge, this is exactly what makes this puzzle so appealing.

How it turns

The mechanism uses ball-bearing positioning. Thanks to this, both the faces and the rotating centers give a light "click" at each position, so you can easily feel when a piece is in place. Turning is smooth, and corner cutting is decent. This is a puzzle for solving for fun, not for breaking records. There are no magnets inside. According to the manufacturer's specifications, you can adjust how the mechanism feels using the adjustment screws.

Who is it for?

The Petal Pyraminx is not allowed in official WCA competitions, so if you train pyraminx for times, choose the classic model. This puzzle is great for cubers who collect unusual puzzles, enjoy finding solutions on their own, or want a fresh take on a puzzle they already know. It can also be a good gift for a child who has already mastered the regular pyraminx and is looking for something harder.
