A pocket-sized YJ timer with two infrared sensors. It starts and stops when you move your hands away or bring them back, without touching any pads. It shows your average of 5 and of 12 solves and runs on two AAA batteries (not included).
The YJ Pocket Timer from YJ (YongJun) is a small speedcubing timer without touch pads. Instead, it has two infrared sensors, one on each side. You place your hands next to both sides, the timer starts when you lift them away and stops when you put them back. It works just like a classic touch-pad timer, only without touching anything. It measures approx. 77 × 66 × 17 mm and fits in your pocket or a small backpack pocket.
The sensors work at close range. According to reviews, your hands need to be really close to the housing, about 2-3 cm away. Your first few starts and stops may not register, but once you get used to it, the timer works predictably. It works best on a dark, flat surface. A light-coloured or uneven surface can interfere with the sensors. Some users also note that a hard knock on the table can reset the timing.
Besides the time of your current solve, the display can show your average of the last 5 and the last 12 times. There are two buttons on the front, and the power switch is on the side. You can turn off the beep by holding the second button for a few seconds.
This timer is handy when you want to time your solves while travelling, at school or at a friend's place, and don't want to carry a mat with a large timer. It also works well as a simple first timer for a child. Competitions, however, use timers with touch pads. If you want to practise exactly the same start and stop, choose a classic speedcubing timer. The Pocket version also can't fully replace a timing app, as it doesn't save detailed statistics.
