YJ RuiLong 3x3x3

The YJ RuiLong 3x3x3 is a budget non-magnetic cube from the "Rui" series, released by YJ in 2018. Most people buy it to get started: as a first cube for learning to solve, as a spare cube or as a base for their own mods. The cube is 56 mm in size and comes in the stickerless bright version. It uses colored plastic instead of stickers, so there is nothing to wear off or peel away.

How it turns

The RuiLong looks a lot like MoYu's classic AoLong V2. Reviewers describe it as moderately fast, solid and clicky. The turning is more controllable than very fast, and the corner cutting is enough for relaxed solving and for learning the beginner's method. There are no magnets, so the layers won't snap into place on their own. You have to align them more precisely than on a magnetic cube, which isn't necessarily a drawback when you're still learning.

What to watch out for

The biggest issue at first is the very stiff tension adjustment screws. Adjusting the tension on a new cube takes more force than usual. After the first few adjustments, the screws turn more easily and the problem goes away.

What it's good for

• A first 3x3 cube. It's all you need to learn to solve, kids included, without spending money on a speedcubing model.
• BLD solving. Its calm, predictable feel suits blindfolded solving, where accuracy matters more than TPS.
• Learning to magnetize. It's an inexpensive model, so it's a good choice for your first attempt at installing magnets yourself. A mistake won't cost you much.

If you already solve regularly and want to improve your times, consider a budget magnetic cube instead. It gives you more stability when turning fast.
