YJ Sulong 3x3

A budget 3x3 cube from YongJun (YJ), released in autumn 2013. The YJ Sulong 3x3 has no magnets, Ball-Core or MagLev. It is a simple design, but it turns well for its price range. We offer the version with a black body.

How it turns

The Sulong turns lightly and has a smooth feel with a noticeable hint of crispiness. It is not a fast cube. Even at launch it turned more slowly than the MoYu and DaYan models of the time, but this makes it easy to control and overshooting is rare. Corner cutting is about 45 degrees, and reverse corner cutting is roughly 3/4 of a piece. In 2013 this was a very good result for an inexpensive cube.

The mechanism is stable. Popping only occurs at very loose tension. Its weaker point is minor lockups during faster turning. Users also point out that the cube is not a quiet one, and individual units can vary slightly.

The Sulong vs. modern magnetic cubes

This design dates from before the era of magnetic cubes. In newer models, magnets help the layers align and reduce accidental turns, while the Sulong relies solely on its mechanism and the set tension. If you want to time your solves and work on your TPS regularly, you will progress faster on a budget magnetic cube. For learning to solve and relaxed practice, the Sulong is perfectly sufficient.

Who is it for?

For anyone who is just learning to solve the 3x3 cube, e.g. with the layer-by-layer method. It is also a sensible choice for parents looking for a child's first cube that turns much more easily than an ordinary toy cube. It also works well as a spare cube for your backpack or for school, since you don't have to worry about it. More experienced speedcubers are unlikely to find their main in it.
