YJ YuanFang 2x2x2

YJ YuanFang 2x2x2 is a shape mod, a 2x2 cube with a modified shape, made by YJ (YongJun). It turns just like a regular 2x2 cube but looks different. Instead of flat faces it has a wavy shape, so from the side it looks like a rippled cube. There are no coloured faces. The whole cube comes in a single metallic colour, gold (Golden) or silver (Silver), so it looks more like a shelf ornament than a typical cube.

How to solve it

The moves and algorithms are the same as on a 2x2. Only the goal is different: the cube is a single colour, so instead of matching colours you restore its original shape. The cube is solved when the waves form an even shape again. If you can solve a 2x2, you already know the method. The harder part is recognising the pieces, because you have to read the cube by the height and shape of the blocks rather than by colour. That makes it slower to solve than you might expect.

Turning and construction

To be honest, this is not a cube for speedsolving. It turns pleasantly but not very smoothly. The pieces are only slightly rounded and the internal mechanism is very simple. As a result, corner cutting is minimal and the cube quickly starts to resist when you turn faster. It does have an advantage, though: it is very hard to take apart, so with normal use it should not pop.

Who is it for?

Mainly for collectors and anyone who enjoys unusual puzzles. It looks great on a shelf and can be an interesting gift for someone who already solves the 2x2. For practice, breaking records and competitions, a classic magnetic 2x2 cube is a better choice. The YuanFang is not allowed in official competitions. The cube comes in a nice cardboard box with a window that shows the puzzle, so it is ready to give as a gift.
