YJ Zhilong M Mini 5x5

YJ ZhiLong Mini 5x5 M

YJ ZhiLong Mini 5x5 M is a magnetic 5x5 cube with a side length of 58 mm. It is the largest puzzle in the ZhiLong Mini series, in which YJ also released smaller 2x2, 3x3 and 4x4 cubes. Most modern 5x5 cubes measure 60-62 mm, while this one is only slightly larger than a standard 3x3. The model was released in 2020 as the ZhiChuang M 5x5, and the manufacturer later renamed it ZhiLong Mini 5x5 M.

How it turns

The internal mechanism resembles full-size 5x5 cubes. However, it is not simply a scaled-down YJ MGC 5x5, as it behaves a little differently in your hands. The pieces use as little plastic as possible, so the cube is light (approx. 116-117 g). You will notice this during longer 5x5 solves.

According to users and reviewers, the ZhiLong Mini 5x5 M is fast and smooth, has good corner cutting and feels rather loose right from the start. YJ used stronger magnets in the inner layers and weaker ones in the outer layers. This keeps the cube stable while outer layer turns don't feel heavy. The magnets are noticeable but don't give a strong "click", so long sessions are less tiring for your hands. Some people notice that the feel is slightly sandy straight out of the box, but this goes away after a dozen or so solves.

Adjustment

Tension is adjusted with adjustment screws. If you want a more stable and controllable cube, you can tighten it a little, as the factory setting is fairly loose. The cube does not have MagLev, Ball-Core or a UV coating.

Who is it for?

Size is the most important and at the same time the most debated feature here. The Mini 5x5 is a great fit for people with smaller hands, children and cubers who simply prefer smaller cubes. If you're used to 62 mm cubes, inner layer turns may feel cramped at first. It's a good choice for your first magnetic 5x5, and the cube is also legal in official WCA competitions.
