YuXin 2x2 Magic Eye

YuXin 2x2 Magic Eye is a 2x2 shape mod. Inside, it has a regular 2x2 cube mechanism, so it turns the same way and you solve it with the same methods and algorithms. What changes is the look: instead of flat faces, it has recessed corners, and each of them holds a coloured piece of stickerless plastic.

What makes it tricky

The coloured pieces sit in recesses, so the colours you see depend on the angle you look at the cube from. The solved state is clearly visible only from some sides, and from other angles even a solved cube can look scrambled. The algorithms are the same as on a 2x2, but it's harder to read what's happening on the faces and where a given piece should go. You know the moves; the challenge is reading the cube correctly.

Who is the YuXin Magic Eye 2x2 for

It makes the most sense for people who can already solve a regular 2x2 and want something new without learning a new method. It's also an inexpensive and unusual addition to a puzzle collection. A child who knows the 2x2 basics may enjoy the Magic Eye, because the moves are the same as on a regular cube, but the task looks different. For a first 2x2 to learn on, a regular model is a better choice, because you can see straight away whether a face is solved.

This is not a speedcubing cube. It has no magnets and is not allowed in official competitions. You buy it for its unusual look and the fun of reading the cube, not to break records.
