YuXin Black Kylin 2x2x2 is a budget non-magnetic 2x2 cube with a simple, classic mechanism. It measures 50 mm, has a slightly matte (frosted) surface and comes in a stickerless bright colour scheme, so there are no stickers to wear off or peel. It's a great first 2x2 cube for anyone who is just learning to solve.

How it turns

The Kylin turns smoothly right out of the box and needs no setup to get started. The feel is smooth, and the cube behaves in a stable, predictable way. When you're learning the beginner's method, this matters, because the cube doesn't get out of control. The matte plastic gives a good grip and doesn't look shiny.

Its limitations are clear too. Corner cutting is average, and without magnets the layers don't snap into place on their own. When you turn faster, you have to finish your moves more precisely. A speedcuber working on TPS and practising algorithms against the clock will quickly notice the difference compared to magnetic 2x2 cubes. In that case, it's better to go straight for a magnetic model.

Tension adjustment

Tension is adjusted with screws hidden under the centre caps. Tightening them makes the cube stiffer and more stable. Loosening them makes it turn more lightly, but popping becomes more likely. There's no dial system or compression adjustment like in more expensive models, but the simple design makes it easy to take the cube apart, clean it and lube it.

Who is it for?

For kids and adults starting out with the 2x2, and for anyone who wants a cheap spare cube, for example to carry in a backpack. Parents buying a first cube get a solving guide included in the set. The cube is allowed in official competitions.
