YuXin Black Kylin 5x5x5

YuXin Black Kylin 5x5x5: a budget 5x5 cube to start with big cubes

YuXin has been making affordable larger cubes for years, and the YuXin Black Kylin 5x5x5 is one of the brand's simpler models. This 5x5 cube was released in 2020. It measures 63 mm, has a matte (frosted) surface and bright plastic colors in the Stickerless Bright version. Compared with more expensive models it is modest, but it works well as a first 5x5 for learning the reduction method.

How it turns

The Black Kylin is more stable than fast. The cube keeps its layers under control and rarely pops, but its speed doesn't match newer models. Out of the box it may feel slightly sandy and fairly stiff, especially on the inner layers. In many units the inner layers turn noticeably heavier than the outer layers. Loosening the screws a little and adding lube usually helps: after this setup the turning is smoother and the overall feel is more fluid. Corner cutting is enough for relaxed solving, but with aggressive turning you should expect some catching. According to user reviews, there are fewer lockups than on some other budget 5x5 cubes, and the cube feels solid.

Tension adjustment

Tension is set with adjustment screws under the centers. It's worth doing this right after purchase, because the factory setting can be uneven across different faces.

Who is this 5x5 cube for?

For anyone who can already solve a 3x3 or 4x4 and wants to find out, without spending much, whether they enjoy the 5x5. It also makes a good gift for a child who is starting out with bigger cubes. The cube is legal for official WCA competitions. If you are aiming for good 5x5 times, you will quickly feel its limitations and are better off looking for a magnetic model right away.
