YuXin Black Kylin 5x5x5 V2

YuXin Black Kylin 5x5x5 V2 is a budget non-magnetic 5x5 cube made of plastic in the stickerless bright colour scheme. You won't find the extras known from more expensive cubes here, such as magnets, MagLev, Ball-Core or a UV coating. It's a simple, inexpensive way to get started with bigger cubes. Black Kylin is YuXin's series of economy puzzles, and V2 is the second version of the 5x5 cube in this line.

What to expect

The cube has no magnets, so nothing helps you align the layers. You have to finish every move yourself, and with imprecise turning a 5x5 is more prone to lockups than a magnetic cube. When you're learning the reduction method, i.e. pairing centres and edges, this isn't much of a problem, because at the beginning understanding the algorithms matters more than a high TPS. Over time, it's worth lubing the cube. In budget cubes, lube usually noticeably improves the smoothness of turning and reduces the "sandy" feel that some units have straight out of the box.

Black Kylin V2 or a magnetic 5x5 cube?

A magnetic 5x5 costs more, but you get more stable layers and better control when solving faster. Black Kylin V2 makes sense when:

• you want to find out first whether you'll enjoy the 5x5 at all,
• you're looking for an inexpensive cube to learn the reduction method,
• you're buying a cube for a child who has only just learned to solve the 3x3,
• you need a spare 5x5, e.g. for your backpack.

If you already want to time your solves and practise the 5x5 regularly, it's better to go straight for a magnetic model. You'll get good results with it faster.
