YuXin Black Kylin Rounded Pyramid is a shape mod of the regular YuXin Black Kylin pyraminx. It has a rounded body and only two colors, while inside it runs on a standard pyraminx mechanism. The way you solve it stays the same, but the puzzle looks completely different from a classic pyramid. It was released in 2021.

How is it different from a classic pyraminx?

A regular pyraminx has four flat faces, each in a different color. Here, every two adjacent faces merge into one curved surface in a single color. That's why the whole puzzle has only two colors. The idea is inspired by so-called Penrose puzzles, which reduce the number of colors by merging adjacent faces.

The moves are the same as on a regular pyraminx, so if you can solve one, you can solve this version too. What changes is how you read the puzzle. With two colors and a rounded shape, you need to look not only at the color of the pieces but also at how they fit the curvature of the body. If you know the pyraminx by heart, it's a fun change.

Mechanism and adjustment

It uses the Black Kylin pyraminx mechanism with adjustment screws, so you can set the tension to suit you: looser for lighter turning, or tighter for more stability. This puzzle is not made for speedcubing. It is not allowed in official WCA competitions and is better treated as a collector's puzzle than as gear for timed solves.

For collectors of shape mods and for those who can already solve a pyraminx and want something that looks different but doesn't require learning new algorithms. It also makes a great gift for anyone who likes unusual puzzles. For your first pyraminx, it's better to choose a classic four-color model, as it makes the puzzle's structure easier to understand.
