YuXin Calf 2x2x2

YuXin Calf 2x2x2 is a 2x2 cube shaped like a cow (a calf). It belongs to the YuXin animal puzzle series, which also includes Mouse, Tiger, Panda and Penguin, among others. Under the outer shape there is a standard 2x2 mechanism, so it turns much like YuXin's classic 2x2 cubes. That means the figure isn't just a decoration: you can scramble and solve it like any other puzzle. The colour of this variant is Yellow.

How it solves

Calf is a shape mod: the shape of the pieces changes, but the mechanism stays the same. If you can solve a regular 2x2 cube, you can solve this one too. The different colours correspond to individual parts of the cow's body, so in the solved figure everything returns to its place. Once scrambled, the irregular shape does its job: the figure falls apart, and matching the pieces takes a bit more thinking than a regular 2x2.

Keep in mind, though, that this is a puzzle for fun and collecting, not speedcubing gear. It measures about 11 x 11 x 14 cm and weighs approx. 189 g, so it is noticeably bigger and heavier than a regular 2x2 and is most comfortable to turn with both hands. It has no magnets and is not legal for official WCA competitions.

For collectors of unusual puzzles and anyone collecting the YuXin animal series. Calf also makes a great gift for a child who already knows the basics of solving a 2x2 cube, or is just starting out and loves toys with character. If you're looking for a 2x2 to set fast times, you should rather choose a classic magnetic 2x2 cube.
