YuXin Multi Cube

YuXin Multi Cube is a corner-turning puzzle, which means it turns around its corners. It was designed by Grégoire Pfennig (Greg's Puzzles) and is mass-produced by YuXin. Many shops sell it as the Multi-Skewb, but the factory name of this model is Multi Cube. On the outside it solves like a Master Skewb. The difference is that each face has a window in the middle, and through it you can see a second layer of pieces. You have to solve these inner pieces too.

How the Multi Cube works

The inner pieces have no rotation axes of their own and move only together with the outer layers. They correspond to the pieces of a Compy Cube. In practice every move scrambles the outer and inner puzzles at the same time, so in the end you have to solve both at once. In the original design the puzzle consists of:

• 8 Compy Cube corners and 12 Dino Cube edges,
• 6 Skewb centers and 8 Skewb corners,
• 24 Master Skewb X-centers,
• the core.

So one cube combines pieces from several puzzles of the same family: the Skewb, Dino Cube, Compy Cube and Master Skewb.

Difficulty

If you have already solved a Master Skewb, you know most of the techniques you need. According to customer reviews, the main challenge is the inner pieces: you can't see them through the windows as clearly as the outer stickers, so it's harder to track how they move. That's why some people start with the inside and only then add the outer layer. Customers also point out that there are few tutorials and they are fairly general. As a first puzzle other than a 3x3, it's too big a step. It's better to master a regular Skewb first, because its moves work differently from a classic cube.

Who is it for?

For collectors and anyone who enjoys unusual puzzles. It will be the most fun for those who have already solved the Skewb and Master Skewb and now want a harder version of the same mechanism. This is not a speedcubing cube. Here it's all about figuring things out, not about time. It also looks great on a shelf, as the windows show colorful pieces against the black body.
