YuXin Petal Icosahedron Ultimate is an icosahedron, a shape with 20 triangular faces. Each face is divided into petal-shaped pieces. It differs from the regular Petal Icosahedron in one important detail: every petal has an extra cut. It looks like a small change, but it makes the puzzle behave differently and gives you more ways to scramble it.

How this puzzle works

The Petal Icosahedron is an edge turner. You turn the edges, not the faces. The basic move is a 180-degree edge turn. The edges stay in place, and the petals move along fixed paths. If you have solved a Curvy Copter, you will quickly recognise the pattern. Part of the solution also relies on simple 3-cycles, similar to those on the Pyraminx or Dino Cube.

In the standard version some moves are blocked (bandaging), just like on the classic Copter. The extra cut in the Ultimate version unlocks some of them. This lets you perform jumbling moves, during which pieces separate and the puzzle changes shape. You can scramble it with regular 180-degree turns or with jumbling, which makes solving much longer.

Ultimate or standard version?

Both versions have the same shape and colour scheme. In the standard version the pieces stay locked in pairs, as on the Copter. In the Ultimate they can separate further, which adds an extra solving stage: first you have to pair them up again. Some users find the Ultimate version harder, others think it is the other way round. The choice largely depends on whether you are interested in jumbling.
