YuXin Treasure Chest 3x3x3 is a regular, fully working 3x3 cube with an empty compartment inside. Instead of a classic core, it has a small storage space for little items. You can only open it once the cube is solved, so the compartment works like a small puzzle of its own. The model was released in 2018 and comes in two versions: Black and Stickerless Bright.

How to open the compartment

First, you need to solve the cube. The manufacturer only mentions a solved cube, but in practice what matters most is a solved white face. Then you press the white center in until it locks and turn the white layer to the left, i.e. counterclockwise. The layer then unscrews like a nut. To close the compartment, screw the layer back on and gently pull it, which releases the center. You'll find the details in the instructions included in the set.

According to user reviews, a new cube can be quite stiff the first time you open it, and it may feel like something is about to break. Just press the center firmly and wiggle the layer slightly until it comes all the way off. After a few openings, the mechanism works noticeably more smoothly.

How it turns

Despite its hollow interior, the cube turns surprisingly well. Some reviewers compare it to older speed cubes. However, don't expect it to perform like a modern magnetic cube. It's a novelty and a gadget, not a training cube for breaking records. For regular timed solving, a typical speedcubing cube is a better choice.

The Treasure Chest works best as a gift with a surprise inside. You can hide a small present, a note or some money in it. Only someone who can solve the cube will get to them.
