The Z-cube Penrose Cube is a 3x3 shape mod with rounded edges that form a pattern all the way around the cube when solved. It has only three colors on a black body. Because of this, many pieces look the same and parity-like situations come up, so this cube is a great fit for people who can already solve a classic 3x3.
The Z-cube Penrose Cube is a 3x3 shape mod from Zcube. Some of the edges are rounded. When the cube is solved, the arcs join into a repeating pattern that runs all the way around it. The puzzle has only three colors on a black body: white, red and blue. This small detail changes the way you solve it more than you might think at first glance.
On a regular 3x3, every piece has exactly one correct spot. On the Penrose Cube, with only three colors, many pieces look the same, so a piece's position also depends on its shape, that is, on where the rounded edge falls. The cube can look almost solved by color while the arcs still don't line up. Near the end of a solve, you'll often run into parity-like situations, such as two swapped corners. They usually happen because pieces that only look identical ended up in the wrong places earlier on. They can be solved, but you need to think about shape, not just colors.
Once scrambled, the rounded edges move to different places and the cube no longer looks like a regular cube. That's why the Penrose is in the shape-shifting puzzle category, even though mechanically it is still an ordinary 3x3.
This is a puzzle for solving for fun, not a cube for setting times. It has no magnets or advanced tension adjustment systems. According to buyers' reviews, turning is smooth for this price range. However, lockups can occur, and the cube can be loosely tensioned straight out of the box. After tightening and lubing it, it usually feels noticeably more stable.
For people who can solve a 3x3 and are looking for something other than yet another speed cube. The Penrose Cube is also useful for understanding how piece permutation and orientation work, because the cube mercilessly exposes any mistakes in judging them. For your very first cube, it's better to get a classic 3x3 and come back to the Penrose once you've mastered the basics.
