Z-Timer by Zcube is a simple speedcubing timer with touch sensors and a transparent housing made of hard plastic. It saves your last 5 results and calculates their average. It runs on 2 AAA batteries, which you need to buy separately.
Z-Timer is a simple speedcubing timer by Zcube, designed for practice at home. It works like the timers used at competitions: it starts timing when you lift your hands off the sensors and stops when you put them back down. The housing is made of hard, transparent plastic, so you can see the electronics inside. In our shop, the timer is available in the Transparent version.
Before a solve, you place both hands on the touch pads on the sides of the timer. As soon as you lift your hands, the time starts running. Once you've solved the cube, you put your hands back down and the time stops. This is more accurate than a stopwatch on your phone, because you don't have to tap anything with one hand while holding the cube. You also get used to starting and stopping the time the same way it's done at WCA competitions.
The timer saves your last 5 results and calculates their average. When practicing your average of five (Ao5), you don't need to write down every time on paper. For detailed statistics, sessions and results history over many weeks, it's better to use an app or a computer program and treat the Z-Timer as a physical timer just for timing.
Z-Timer runs on 2 AAA batteries, which are not included, so you need to buy them separately. The housing also has space for two additional AAA batteries.
Z-Timer is a sensible choice for a first physical timer, for example for someone who has just started timing their solves, or for a parent who wants to give their child something that will encourage them to beat their personal records. It also works well for more experienced cubers as an extra timer for quick practice sessions. If you plan to simulate competition conditions or connect the timer to a computer or display, you should rather choose a model whose manufacturer explicitly states that compatibility. We have no confirmed information on this for the Z-Timer. It's best to place the timer on a speedcubing mat, so it doesn't slide across the table and the cube lands on a soft surface.
