Speed Stacks Pro Gen 5 Set: G5 Timer + G5 Mat + Bag

This set is a ready-to-use timing station for both speedcubing and sport stacking. The Speed Stacks Pro Gen 5 Set includes three items: the Speed Stacks Pro Gen 5 timer (G5 StackMat Pro Timer), the Gen 5 mat and a carrying bag. The same timer is used on the tables at WCA competitions, so at home you train under the same conditions as at a competition.

The G5 timer at competitions and at home

The G5 timer has two modes. In 2-Pad mode, you start and stop the timer by placing your fingers on two touch pads. This is the mode used for cubes. 4-Pad mode also requires you to place your thumbs on the pads. It is designed for sport stacking because it prevents starting or stopping with cups in your hands. To switch modes, hold the RESET button for about 5 seconds. At WCA competitions, the Gen 5 timer is allowed only in 2-Pad mode, so it's a good idea to use this mode when training for competitions.

Time is measured to 0.001 s. The RESET and POWER buttons only work when held down, so slapping the timer hard at the end of a solve won't erase your result. The manufacturer has also reinforced the buttons so they don't wear out with heavy use. On the bottom there is a data port for connecting an external display or, with a suitable cable, a computer running timing software such as csTimer. The plug sits underneath, so the cable is hard to pull out by accident. The timer runs on two AAA batteries.

The G5 mat and bag

The timer clips into the G5 mat with a snap-fit system, so it doesn't slide off during fast movements. The mat gives you a stable, non-slip surface for inspection and solving. Note: the G5 timer does not fit Gen 3 or Gen 4 mats, which is why the set comes with a matching mat. The bag holds the mat with the timer and still has some room left for a few cubes, so it's easy to take all your gear to a competition, to school or to a club meeting.

Who is it for?

This set is a great choice if you want to time your solves the way it's done at competitions, not just with a phone app. It's also useful for schools and sport stacking clubs. If you already have a working Gen 4 timer with a mat, you don't need to switch. The G5 mainly adds 4-Pad mode and button safeguards, while the core timing function stays the same.
