AJ 4x4 Curvy Dinominx

Despite the "4x4" in its name, this is not a 4x4 cube. The AJ 4x4 Curvy Dinominx is a corner-turning dodecahedron. It is a higher-order, curvy version of the classic Dinominx. The number in the name refers to a higher level of complexity than the standard model, not to the number of layers as with cubes. You may also find this puzzle under the name Red Cotton Curvy Dinominx. We offer the version with a black body.

How the Curvy Dinominx works

The Dinominx takes the principle of the Dino Cube and applies it to a dodecahedron. Instead of turning faces, as on a Megaminx, you rotate a section of the puzzle around a chosen vertex, which makes it a corner-turning puzzle. In the curvy version the cuts are curved, so the surface is divided into more pieces than on the basic Dinominx. As a result, solving takes longer and requires more planning. The move itself is easy to understand from the very first turn. The hard part is keeping track of which pieces move together.

There is no popular, ready-made method with a set of algorithms for this puzzle, as there is for the 3x3 cube. It is usually solved partly intuitively, with the rest done using commutators. If you already know the Dino Cube, the standard Dinominx or other corner-turning puzzles, you will have a much easier start.

Who is it for?

This puzzle is for those who have already tackled a few unusual puzzles and are looking for something to figure out at a relaxed pace, as well as for collectors of dodecahedra. It is not a speedcubing puzzle: it is not part of any WCA event and TPS does not matter here. For your first puzzle, a Megaminx, Dino Cube or Skewb is a better choice. The Curvy Dinominx can be a natural next step after them.
