AJ Bauhinia Dodecahedron

A dodecahedron that turns around its corners, not its faces. The AJ Bauhinia Dodecahedron was designed by A J Lu. It was released in 2020 and is listed in many sources as the Bauhinia Dodecahedron II. It is a new version of the classic Bauhinia puzzle by mf8, which cubers often call the Rex Dodecahedron because it brings the Rex Cube idea to a dodecahedron. This version has a black body.

How it differs from the original Bauhinia Dodecahedron

The mechanism works the same way, but the cuts are slightly deeper. As a result, each vertex gets a separate corner piece that the original did not have. In practice, this adds a new type of piece to solve, so solving it requires a different approach than the first version. When solved, the puzzle looks just like the Curvy Starminx, but the two puzzles have completely different axes of rotation, so experience with one won't help much with the other.

How it solves

This is a puzzle you turn for the challenge itself, not for speed. The mechanism allows jumbling: after turns by a partial angle, the puzzle changes shape and some pieces can become blocked (bandaging). According to user reviews, it is demanding, but you can solve it from start to finish if you know commutators well and have the patience to find your own sequences. Don't turn it aggressively, as popping can occur with overly energetic turning.

Who is it for?

For experienced cubers and collectors who have already mastered the Megaminx, the Rex Cube or other corner-turning puzzles and want a tougher challenge. If you are just starting out or looking for a gift for a child, we recommend a simpler dodecahedron puzzle to begin with.
