The AJ Double Crazy Megaminx is a dodecahedron built on a regular Megaminx, but with two concentric circles on each of its 12 faces. The circles divide each face into extra rings, so there are far more pieces than on a classic Megaminx. On top of that, not all faces behave the same way. This version has a purple body and factory-applied stickers, so you can start solving it right out of the box.

What "double crazy" means

In crazy-type puzzles, whether a ring turns together with a layer depends on whether it is connected to the face center. According to one distributor's description, this model has three types of faces. On a type 0 face, the whole center turns; on a type 1 face, the small inner circle stays in place; and on a type 2 face, both inner circles stay still. From the factory, there should be 4 faces of each type. This is why the same move changes the arrangement of pieces differently depending on the face. You need to take this into account both when looking for algorithms and when simply tracking pieces.

What it's like to solve

At 106 × 106 × 90 mm and 326 g, this Megaminx is noticeably bigger and heavier than speedcubing Megaminxes. It is not suited to high TPS, and that's not what it was made for. You solve it slowly and thoughtfully, with most of the time spent on analysis rather than turning. Because of its size, it's more comfortable to hold it in both hands than to finger-trick it like a speed cube.

Who is it for?

For those who can solve a classic Megaminx with ease and want something much more challenging. It's also a great pick for collectors of crazy puzzles and shape mods. If you're just getting started with dodecahedrons, it's better to get a regular Megaminx first, because without knowing its method this puzzle will be very difficult. It's also not a puzzle for competition practice, as the Double Crazy Megaminx is not an official event.
