AJ puzzle Duo Axis Cube is a shape-shifting puzzle designed by AJ and manufactured by mf8. From the outside it looks like a classic Axis Cube, but a different mechanism works inside. It is not based on a regular 3x3 cube but on a 3x3x5 cuboid enclosed in a cube shape. The turning planes are rotated by 60 degrees around the diagonal connecting two opposite corners. On top of that, asymmetric cuts give you more movement options than a standard Axis. We offer the version with a black body.

How it differs from a regular Axis Cube

The classic Axis Cube is a shape mod of the 3x3 cube. It changes shape when scrambled, but you can solve it with the same methods as a 3x3 once you learn to recognize the pieces. That doesn't work with the Duo Axis. There are more layers along one axis and the middle edges are split, so in practice you are solving a cuboid that also changes shape a lot. Users compare its difficulty to the Ghost Cube. Even scrambling it thoroughly takes a while, because some moves are blocked at the start.

How it turns

This is not a speedcube, so don't expect speedcube-level turning. Corner cutting is practically non-existent, so the layers have to be precisely aligned before every move. Otherwise you will get lockups and catching. The plastic is light and, according to some reviews, fairly delicate, so it's best to turn calmly and not force blocked layers. Some users received a factory-lubed copy and praise its smoothness, while others had to fine-tune the mechanism themselves. If your copy is stiffer, a good lube usually helps.

Who is it for?

For those who have already mastered the regular Axis, the Mirror Cube or cuboids and want a more challenging shape-shifting puzzle. The Duo Axis will also appeal to twisty puzzle collectors, as it is an unusual design by AJ. For your first shape mod, the classic Axis Cube is a better choice.
